Three hiring behaviors that matter
Five minutes. One idea. Better odds in your next job search.
Most resumes are not bad. They are just competing the wrong way. These are the three things I watched matter most when I was hiring.
Get one person to refer you, every time.
Almost nobody asks on purpose. You do not need a friend at the company. You need one person willing to pass your name to the hiring team. When someone on my team vouched for a candidate, that resume went to the top of my pile before I read a word of it. That is the whole game.
Apply in the first 48 hours, or do not bother rushing.
Hiring teams review in batches, and the first batch becomes the shortlist. By batch three, the seat is half filled in their heads. Set an alert for your target companies and get in early. By the time I had a stack of applications on my desk, I was already comparing people to each other. Early applicants set the bar the rest got measured against.
Send the thank-you note. It is a coin flip most people lose.
Send a short, specific note within 24 hours that references something real from the conversation. Not a template. A thank-you note never got someone the job on its own. But between two people I liked equally, the one who wrote a sharp, specific note is the one I called.
Hiring Manager Reality Check
The fastest way to lose me was a resume that listed responsibilities instead of results. “Managed a team of eight” told me nothing. “Cut onboarding time 40 percent across a team of eight” told me everything. End every bullet with the outcome first, then the scope.
